Many biotech stocks struggled in 2023 despite a robust year for U.S. drug approvals. "We expect this environment to continue but look forward to the prospect of lower interest rates in 2024." When that happens, Canaccord Genuity said to expect a "strong rally across the biotech sector rewarding innovative, but riskier assets." Analysts have said the rich price reflects the opportunity for ImmunoGen's Elahere cancer treatment , which has quickly established itself as the standard of care for types of ovarian cancer. As biopharma investors follow the latest buzz around advancements in clinical research, they may be under-appreciating opportunities in neurology, psychiatry and genetic medicine, according to a report from Oppenheimer. "Valuation multiples across disease areas show CNS [ or central nervous system] and Genetic Medicine at relative low points." In July, the Food and Drug Administration could grant full approval to Leqembi , its Alzheimer's Disease treatment. As a very new area of medicine, gene therapy has greatest potential to accelerate sales growth as treatments come to market. He described immunology multiples as "generally stable" and genetic medicine multiples as highly volatile.
Still, the outlook for biotech stocks could improve now , with innovation in new drugs and more merger and acquisition activity driving investor interest. Recently, Wall Street has been zoning in on developments in treatments for Alzheimer's diseases, drugs for weight loss and treatments using gene editing. CNBC Pro screened for biotech stocks that are part of the iShares Biotechnology ETF , searching for names with huge upside from current prices. In January, Piper Sandler initiated research coverage of Karuna with an overweight rating, saying it's "blazing a new trail in Schizophrenia" treatments. The stock was named another top 2023 pick by Piper Sandler, which said Legend has a "best-in-class" treatment for adults with relapsed multiple myeloma, a segment "with demand far outpacing supply."
Each name in the list that follows has potential upside of about 35% or more, buy ratings from at least 60% of analysts and at least 10 analysts covering the stock. In an interview with Insider, Loncar shared 10 predictions for biotech in 2023, ranging from Nobel Prize winners and presidential runs to hot cancer targets and bankruptcy worries. 2022 was a rough year for the biotech industry, which once again underperformed the stock market. The industry runs to the next super-hot cancer target: Claudin 18.2In cancer research, drug companies are always on the hunt for the next promising target.
Biotech has been a "stock-pickers market" — and it may have just what it takes to remain one in 2023, according to Citi. Under a bad recession scenario, Citi prefers names with large cash balances and which have already commercialized drugs, or which are on the verge of drug approvals. Some names that meet those criteria include Apellis Pharmaceuticals , Acadia Pharmaceuticals and Amylyx Pharmaceuticals , Citi said. Its pre-clinical pipeline could also "drive long-term value across a number of large market opportunities." "[Its] strong cash position makes BEAM attractive even in a hard-landing scenario," Citi said.
Investors looking for cover this year would have done well if they sought a safe haven in large-cap pharmaceutical stocks, a trend that is likely to continue into 2023. The Inflation Reduction Act provided some clarity around drug pricing that should help health-care stocks. The average price target, according to FactSet, is $62, or nearly 40% above the stock's closing price on Tuesday. Gene therapies in focus Investors will be closely watching the progress of several gene therapies, according to Phipps. "Yes, these are expensive therapies," Phipps said.
